COMPOSER


Benjamin Martin's career as a composer was officially launched in 1992 when John Browning gave the World Premiere of Martin's Three Portrait Etudes at The Alice Tully Hall, NY. Benjamin’s music is featured on the Canadian label Tout Crin, and has been performed in Europe, Asia, and the United States, notably by Kristian Jarvi’s Absolute Ensemble, which toured Australia in 2002.  In 2009 Martin toured the United States with violinist Janice Martin (no relation) and outstanding New York jazz musicians Jason Di Matteo (bass) and Greg Gonzales (drums) performing improvisations plus Benjamin’s own music.

In 2010, Clockface - a large work resulting from a collaboration between Benjamin and the painter-poet Matthew Hooper - received its premiere in the Sydney Chamber Music Festival, featuring Guy Noble as narrator.  In 2011, Firebird Trio premiered Martin's Fanfares at The Melbourne Recital Center, which subsequently led to numerous commissions including the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra commissioning a triple concerto (entitled Trinitas), the Seraphim Trio (for both a transcription and an original trio for 2012), and the Elanee Ensemble which premiered The Carousel for viola, bass and piano in 2012.Benjamin Martin also enjoys an ongoing communication with the founder of Minimalism, Terry Riley, and received the composer's express permission to arrange his Salome Dances for Peace (piano solo) and The Ecstacy (piano trio). Riley wrote: I listened to the recording of your Toccata paraphrase of Half Wolf...It seems to me you are playing it marvelously. This piece and your playing make a wonderful marriage here...thanks for sharing it. It is a stunning performance! Your technique and piano coloring work so well here to make the piece seem like it was originally written for the instrument. 

More recently, his music has attracted the attention of such performers as renowned pianist Antonio Fermin and the London-based Fidelio Trio, the latter scheduled to perform certain of his works at St John's Smith Square in January 2016.

COMPOSITIONS

Benjamin's music - often complex, but harmonically transparent - owes its cohesion to motivic structure. The Sonatines for piano - nine planned in total - are organized according to the following pattern: Nos.1-3 allowing no more than three voices to strike simultaneously, Nos. 4-6 no more than four voices, and Nos. 5-9 no more than five.  'Neocantus' explores new polyphonic techniques evolved from the principle pinball voicing.  'The Carousel' also explores this technique.
